Get Crafty at the Institute of Mosaic Art

The Institute of Mosaic Art’s fall season kicks off tonight with a reception and book signing by artist Laurie Mika, whose exhibit continues through September 30th. Use the event as a jumping off point to explore the craft of mosaic - fall classes at the institute begin Sept. 12.
With courses including “portraiture in mosaic,” “mosaicing small objects,” and “glass fusing for mosaic,” glass and craft enthusiasts will have a field day creating designs with tiny shards and tesserae.

Located in Jingletown near the Fruitvale waterfront, IMA also serves as the studio for notable Oakland mosaic artist Laurel True and houses Mosaic Studio Supply, a supply smorgasboard for glass artists.
You can’t miss the big purple building (and you wouldn’t want to); it, and surrounding buildings are covered in mosaic work by students from IMA.
